Born: 11 May 1904, Figueres, Catalonia, Spain
Died: 23 January 1989, Figueres, Catalonia, Spain
Dali was born nine months after an older brother died and his parents babied and spoiled him enough for two, actually believing that the second Salvador Dali was the reincarnation of the first. He had his first exhibition of impressionist works at age thirteen. He entered Acadamia de San Fernando in 1922 and shifted to cubism. A few years later he had turned to surrealism, his most famous work, Persistence of Memory, which featured clocks melting, came in 1931. He had joined the French Surrealist Group in Paris in 1928 but didn't embrace their politics, he was "tried" and expelled for his politics 1934. He and his wife lived in the US from 1940-1948, then returned to Catalonia in 1949 and was criticized for living in Franco's Spain. He had an exquisite photo-realistic painting style, an incredible ego, a finely honed sense of self promotion, and one of the finest mustaches ever.
