Born: 2 August 1932, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England
The date and place shown here are the data he personally accepts, he also has a birth certificate from Connemara, Ireland showing a June date. O'Toole was evacuated from Leeds at the beginning of WW II and sent to a Catholic school where the nuns attempted to make him right-handed. After graduation he worked as a trainee reporter and photographer for the Yorkshire Evening Post until he was called up for service as a Signaler in the Royal Navy. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (1951-1954) and acted Shakespearean roles at the Bristol Old Vic until he was cast as T. E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia in 1962. Premiere Magazine rates this as the greatest acting performance of all time, it won him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He now has the most nominations in that category for anyone who has not won one, the Academy Honorary Award he won in 2003 was presented by the actor with the most Oscar nominations of all time, Meryl Streep (with fifteen). O'Toole was active on stage through 1999, he has had roles in about 65 films to date, and has acted in 25 television productions. His heavy drinking led to removal of his pancreas and part of his stomach, which resulted in insulin dependence. He still drinks, and despite legislation in many areas he smokes when and where he likes, and generally gets away with it. He wears only green socks in honor of his Irish heritage, although the color is more muted than it once was.
