Born: 4 April 1928, Saint Louis, Missouri
Dr Angelou has been a poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. She was the second poet to contribute original poetry to a US presidential inauguration, the author of eleven books, and the source of myriad trenchant and inspiring quotes.
