Howard Allen O'Brien (Anne) Rice

Born: 4 October 1941, New Orleans, Louisiana
The second daughter in an Irish Catholic family, she was christened with her father's name: Howard Allen O'Brien. When her mother took her to school for the first time a nun asked her her name, she said "Anne" and her mother didn't correct her. She lost her mother to alcoholism when she was about thirteen, in 1958 when she was sixteen she moved with her father and sister to Richardson, Texas where she graduated from Richardson High School. She enrolled at Texas Woman's University at Denton, then moved to North Texas State College, and finished her B.A. in political science at San Francisco State University. Stan Rice, who she met at Richardson High, earned his M.A. at San Francisco State, married Anne, and became an instructor at their alma mater. They lived in Haight Ashbury through the 'sixties, then in Berkeley, before returning to New Orleans in 1988. They had a daughter in 1966 who would die shortly before her sixth birthday of leukemia. Ann wrote Interview with a Vampire in 1973, it was published in 1976, the first of ten novels in The Vampire Chronicles series. She has also written another twenty novels. In 1998 she announced that she was returning to the Roman Catholic Church and in 2002 said she was consecrating her future writing to Christ. Stan died of brain cancer, also in 2002. In July of 2010, having written several books on Christian themes, she announced that although her Christian faith was strong, frustration with intolerance in churches led her to quit Christianity.
