Andy Warhol, 1928 - 1987

Born: 6 August 1928, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Died: 22 February 1987, New York City
Born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburg's Soho neighborhood, he attended Holmes Elementary and Schenley High School, then trained in commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University), graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Pictorial Design. He started his career as a magazine illustrator at Manhattan, developing a large following of major advertisers and developing a style based on photography. His first Pop work based on comics and ads came in 1961, with the Campbell's Soup Cans coming the next year. As he moved into fine art he established The Factory which served both as the production center for his arts and prints but a gathering place for various music and fashion stars. He started making films in 1963 and sculpture in 1964. In 1968 a writer who had appeared in one of his films came into his studio and shot him in the chest, requiring a five-hour surgery. Warhol focused on celebrities and cultural icons, and he was comfortable with street people, intellectuals, Hollywood personalities, musicians, aristocrats, and politicians. He died in his sleep while recovering from a routine gallbladder surgery.
