Edward Moore Kennedy was the ninth and youngest child of Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Kennedy moved frequently while growing up, attending ten schools by age eleven, a fact that he attributed as the reason for his ease of dealing with many people. He received first communion from Pope Pius XII at the Vatican at age seven. He enrolled at Harvard College but was expelled for having a classmate take a Spanish test for him. He enlisted in the Army, his father's connections got him a safe job in the honor guard with NATO at Paris. He then was allowed to return to Harvard, he graduated in 1956 with a B.A. in history and government. He earned his law degree at the University of Virginia in 1956 and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1959. He managed his brother John's senatorial reelection campaign in 1958, and the presidential campaign in the west in 1960. When John was elected to the White House, the Kennedy family arranged for a family friend to be appointed for two years as Ted was two years short of the Constitutional minimum age for Senators. Ted won the special election in 1962 and held the seat until his death. As early as law school he had a problems with alcohol and automobiles, in 1969 the car he was driving went off a bridge and his passenger was drowned. He ran for president in 1980 but was unable to wrest the Democratic nomination from Carter. Ted and his wife Joan were divorced in 1981, and though the '80s were productive years for him in the Senate his tumultuous personal life was also frequently in the news. He remarried (Victoria) in 1992. He was diagnosed as having a malignant glioma, a brain tumor not easily treated, and he died at home fifteen months later.
