Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806 - 1861

Born: 6 March 1806, Coxhoe Hall, Durham, England
Died: 29 June 1861, Fiorenza, Italy
Elizabeth Barrett sat in on her brother's tutoring sessions and read voraciously. That included the classic Greek and Latin authors, in the original languages. After reading Dante's Inferno she learned Hebrew so she could read the Old Testament. She had published her first volume of poetry by age twenty, and although confined by poor health, her reputation as a poet grew.In 1845 Robert Browning began courting her, they married privately the next year. Her father disowned her upon learning of the marriage, as he had all of his married children, and the Brownings decamped for Pisa for a year, then Fiorenza.
