Born Cherilyn Sarkisian to an Armenian refugee father and an aspiring actress and occasional model. Parents divorced, mostly raised by mother but briefly in foster care due to finances. Mother remarried, husband adopted so her name included LaPierre until legally changing it to the one syllable "Cher" in 1979. She suffered from severe dyslexia not identified by the school, left Fresno High School at age 16. Met Sonny Bono who worked for Phil Specter, did session work including backup vocals on several hits, paired with Bono as "Sonny and Cher", charted several times including the #1 "I Got You Babe" and hosted series of television comedy shows, up to and again after their divorce in 1975. Largely with designer Bob Mackie became known for extravagant revealing costumes. For details on musical and film career, see either of the references below, they're extensive in both fields. After the movie Mask, in which she played the mother of a severely disfigured son, Cher has served as a spokesperson for the Children's Craniofacial Association and has made it the center of her philanthropy along with Project Helmet, a campaign to improve the safety of American combat forces. As a musician she has charted in every decade since the 60s and has the longest span between #1 hits at 33 years, she has sold over 100 million records. Although the schedule was interrupted due to damage to her voice in the dry Las Vegas air, she is currently in a long run at Caesars Palace.
