Born: 19 June 1947, Bombay, British India

Rushdie was born into a faithful Muslim family, the son of a lawyer turned businessman and a teacher. He was educated at Cathedral and John Connon School (Mumbai) and then boarded at Rugby School (Warwickshire, England), then studied history at Cambridge. His first two jobs were writing ad copy at London agencies before he turned to writing full time. Most of his books are set on the Indian subcontinent, often dealing with conflicts between religions and between the faithful and agnostics. He rejected his faith in Islam at age fifteen but didn't really upset things until 1988 when The Satanic Verses was published, a novel which included a traditional story of Mohammed's temptation by the devil. Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa demanding his death and for several years he lived under police protection using the name Joseph Anton. Although the fatwa has never been lifted (Iran claims that only the author of a fatwa can do that) and several million dollars are offered as a bounty on his life, he currently lives at New York City with little immediate fear. When Facebook insisted he use his first name on that service he organized an online campaign to gain the right to use the name he is known for. Rushcie has won a number of major literary awards, several honorary degrees, and was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honors of June 2007. Iran and Pakistan immediately recalled their ambassadors.
