Born: 18 June 1926, Wheeling, West Virginia
Died: 18 August 2001, Winter Park, Florida

Crosby attended public schools at Wheeling, then served as a hospital corpsman in the US Navy during World War II and again in the Korean War, in between he earned a degree at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, now part of Kent State, and joined his father's practice but apparently didn't treat feet for long. He started working in quality as test technician at Crosley Corp (radio electronics, Richmond, Indiana) in 1952, was a reliability engineer at Bendix Corp's missile plant (RIM-8 Talos missile, Mishawaka, Indiana) for two years, then was a senior quality engineer at Martin Marietta Company (Orlando, Florida, now part of Lockheed Martin) on the Pershing missile project from 1957 to 1965. It was at Martin that he developed his Zero Defects concept. Crosby was VP of corporate quality at ITT Corp until 1979 when he published Quality is Free
