Peter Alexander Ustinov was born just months after his mother arrived from Saint Petersburg. Ustinov left school at 16 to become an actor, first appearing on stage in 1938. As a private in the British Army's Royal Sussex Regiment he served as Lt. Col. David Niven's batman. After the war he acted on stage and in films, earning two Oscars for Best Supporting Actor, and he portrayed Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot in several films. In addition to his wit in English, he was fluent in five other languages. He served as an ambassador for UNICEF and was knighted in 1990.
