Born: 27 July 1935, Denver, Colorado

Augustine was active in scouting, becoming an Eagle Scout (1952), graduated from East Denver High School and graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University, earning his bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering (1957, 1959). He joined McDonald Douglass in 1958 as a Program Manager and rose to Chief Engineer. In 1965 he became Assistant Director of Defense Research and Engineering, then returned to the private sector as Vice President of LTV Missiles and Space Company in 1970. In 1973 it was back to Washington City as Assistant Secretary and then Under Secretary of the Army. He left government to become Vice President of Technical Operations of Martin Marietta in 1977, was elected CEO in 1987, and merged that company with Lockheed in 1995, serving as CEO until his retirement in 1997. He has chaired two committees reviewing the space program, served as president of the Boy Scouts of America, sat on several corporate boards, and has been or is trustee of the University System of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, and MIT. At last count he had received ten honorary doctoral degrees. In 1983 he wrote Augustine's Laws, an insightful and sometimes humorous view of modern management, from which most of these entries were drawn.
