Died: 28 May 2014, Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Dr Angelou has been a poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. She was the second poet to contribute original poetry to a US presidential inauguration, the author of eleven books, and the source of myriad trenchant and inspiring quotes. Angelou died at home following a period of poor health during which she had canceled public appearances.
