Born: 16 August 1958, Bay City, Michigan
Raised in a large Catholic family (six children) at Pontiac and Avon Township (now Rochester Hills), Detroit. Her mother died when "Little Nonni" was five, her father, an automotive design engineer, married the family housekeeper and had two more children. She attended Catholic elementary schools, West Middle School, and Rochester Adams High School where she posted straight As and was a cheerleader. She studied dance at the University of Michigan, but dropped out to study with Alvin Ailey at New York. She sang and played guitar and drums with her first band, the Breakfast Club, then signed with Sire (a Warner Bros. label) in 1982, her eponymous debut in 1983 went to #8, Like a Virgin (1984) and True Blue (1986) made her a pop icon. In 1992 her work became more sexually explicit and she released her metal-covered coffee-table book Sex, the single best selling work in that category, selling three million copies in English, two in French, and one in Japanese. She acted in the title role in Evita in 1996, earning a Golden Globe for best actress. Her four studio albums in this century have all debuted at number one. More than 200 million Madonna albums have been sold worldwide. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. She is currently married to Guy Ritchie, a Scottish film director. She has three children, one with Ritchie and one adopted from Malawi.
