Born: 1 November 1944, Chicago, Illinois

Shortly after Richard (he didn't become Kinky until college) was born, his parents bought a central Texas ranch to create a children's camp which has been in operation for over a half century. He graduated from Austin High School in 1962 and earned a BA in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1966. Friedman joined the Peace Corps and taught on the island of Borneo for two years (1967 - 1969). He formed a country-rock band in 1971, Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys, his songs combined occasionally-scatological satire and social commentary, most famously "They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore". The band taped a show for Austin City Limits in 1975 that was the only episode the producers ever ruled unsuitable for broadcast, and Kinky toured with Bob Dylan in 1976. He has written a series of detective mysteries featuring a fictionalized version of himself, starting with Greenwich Killing Time in 1986. (The Quotemaster enjoys both the music and the stories.) He has written a column for Texas Monthly since 2001, although he took a break from this while running for governor of Texas. Although not taken seriously by many, his lively campaign as an independent did draw 12.6% of the vote, placing fourth in a six-way race. He corresponded with both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and visited both in the White House. A long-time cigar smoker, Friedman has recently launched his own cigar brand.
