Born: 20 October 1859, Burlington, Vermont
Died: 1 June 1952, New York City

Dewey attended the University of Vermont, earning a BA (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1879. He taught high school for three years, thought better of it and earned his PhD at Johns Hopkins (1884) and taught at the University of Michigan until 1894 when he joined the faculty of the newly-created University of Chicago for nine years. From 1904 to retirement in 1930 he taught at Columbia University. He was one of the developers of the philosophy of Pragmatism and a major influence in education and psychology. Although his writing is painfully scholarly, there are gems to be found.
