Born: 4 November 1862, Mount Aboo, Rajputana, British Raj

Phillpotts' father, a captain in the Indian army, was killed when his son was five; his mother moved her three sons back to England. Eden attended Mannamead College at Plymouth and spent holidays exploring Dartmoor. After graduating he moved to London and spent ten years as an insurance clerk, then took acting lessons but discovered his real talent lay in writing. He wrote several mysteries under his own name and as Harrington Hext, but is mainly known for his "Dartmoor Cycle", a series of eighteen novels set in the moors he loved.
