Born: 29 November 1898, Belfast, Ireland
Died: 22 November 1963, Oxford, England

After his mother's death in 1908 "Jack" and his brother were sent to Wynyard School in England, returned to Belfast for a year due to respiratory problems, then finished his education in England at Cherbourg School at Malvern. He earned a scholarship to University College, Oxford and took his officer training nearby when he enlisted in the Somerset Light Infantry in 1917. After the war he served as a tutor at University College before being elected a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford in 1925. He held that post until 1954 when he moved to Magdalen College, Cambridge where he taught the rest of his life. Lewis became an atheist after his mother's death, but in conversation with his friend and Oxford colleague J. R. R. Tolkien he returned to the Church of England in 1931 and became a major Christian author. His works have been printed in thirty languages, the best-known being his memoir Surprised by Joy and the children's classic The Chronicles of Narnia. In 1961 he suffered from blood poisoning related to inflammation of the kidneys, resigned his Cambridge post the next year, and died of renal failure.
