Quotes of the Day for 18 February 2012 – Flight

We've long been proud of the tens of thousands of contented cows grazing on hundreds of "Dairies of Merit" in this area. My neighbors build the finest commercial aircraft in the world just twenty miles from where I sit. The combination makes my heart swell, at least until I read the history of this day and learn that a Guernsey cow named Elm Farm Ollie, subsequently known as "Sky Queen", was the first bovine in flight. She flew from Bismarck, Missouri to Saint Louis on this day in 1930. She was even milked in flight, the fresh whole milk was put in paper cartons and thrown from the plane with parachutes for spectators at the St. Louis International Aircraft Exposition. Alas, I have no quotes that combine lactation and Flight.

The quotes:

He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying.
     - Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, 1844 - 1900

Flying. Whatever any other organism has been able to do man should surely be able to do also, though he may go a different way about it.
     - Samuel Butler, 1835 - 1902

After midnight the moon set and I was alone with the stars. I have often said that the lure of flying is the lure of beauty, and I need no other flight to convince me that the reason flyers fly, whether they know it or not, is the esthetic appeal of flying.
     - Amelia Earhart, 1897 - 1937

You define a good flight by negatives: you didn't get hijacked, you didn't crash, you didn't throw up, you weren't late, you weren't nauseated by the food. So you are grateful.
     - Paul Theroux

Later, I realized that the mission had to end in a let-down because the real barrier wasn't in the sky but in our knowledge and experience of supersonic flight.
     - Chuck Yeager

The focus and the concentration and the attention to detail that flying takes is a kind of meditation. I find it restful and engaging, and other things slip away.
     - Harrison Ford
