Cate Blanchett was born at Ivanhoe, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia on this day in 1969. She started acting at Methodist Ladies' College, equivalent to high school, then went on to the University of Melbourne. On vacation in Egypt when she was eighteen, another guest at a Cairo hotel suggested she take join the set of a film as an extra. On her return to Australia she studied at Sydney's National Institute of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1992. She appeared in a number of Australia films before taking the title role in Elizabeth in 1998 and has played a wide range of movie and stage roles since, including Lady Marian, which releases in the US today. She and her husband are the directors of the Sydney Theatre Company.
