Quotes of the Day for 13 May 2010 – Stevie Wonder
Stevland Hardaway Judkins was born six weeks premature at Saginaw, Michigan on this day in 1950. Blood vessels in his eyes had not yet developed causing his retinas to detach, he was blind. He took to music at a very early age, playing piano, harmonica, drums, and bass. At age eleven, Motown Records CEO Berry Gordy signed him the Tamla label under the name "Little Stevie Wonder". At thirteen he had his first major hit, "Fingertips (Pt. 2)". At 21 he let his contract expire and produced two albums independently, giving him the bargaining strength to demand full artistic control and the rights to his own songs, which Motown had never allowed, not to mention a better royalty rate. He's been making hits ever since, with over thirty singles in the top ten and 22 Grammy Awards.
