Quotes of the Day for 8 November 2009 – Drum Month

I don't pay much attention to the array of commemorative months, weeks, and days. Most of them just don't move me any more than National Fried Celery Week (which doesn't exist) or National Iced Tea Month (which does - June), not to mention that there just aren't that many quotes appropriate for National Welding Month (April). But this is International Drum Month, so let your fingers beat out a strong rhythm on your desk as you check out these quotes on Drums.

The quotes:

The voice of protest, of warning, of appeal is never more needed than when the clamor of fife and drum, echoed by the press and too often by the pulpit, is bidding all men fall in step and obey in silence the tyrannous word of command. Then, more than ever, it is the duty of the good citizen not to be silent.
     - Charles Eliot Norton, True Patriotism, 1898

The drums of Africa still beat in my heart. They will not let me rest while there is a single Negro boy or girl without a chance to prove his worth.
     - Mary McLeod Bethune, 1875 - 1955

As soon as war is declared it will be impossible to hold the poets back. Rhyme is still the most effective drum.
     - Jean Giraudoux, 1882 - 1944

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
     - Wystan Hugh Auden, 1907 - 1973

He that acts unjustly is the worst rebel to himself; and though now ambition's trumpet and the drum of power may drown the sound, yet conscience will one day speak loudly to him.
     - William Havard, 1889 - 1956

Nowadays I get complaints about long drum solos, but in those days they wanted me to keep on going so they could go over to the bar and have a drink.
     - Aynsley Dunbar
