Quotes of the Day for 13 May 2009 – Infallibility
Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti was born on this day in 1792 at Senigallia, Papal States (now Italy, but briefly part of the Italian Republic early in his reign and the Kingdom of Italy by the end of it). As Pope Pius IX, he reigned from 1846 to 1878, the longest tenure in the church?s history, during which time the concept of papal infallibility was developed and promulgated. Personally, I find the idea of an infallible human both unlikely and dangerous, and I couldn't find any quotes that disagreed.
Reason itself is fallible, and this fallibility must find a place in our logic.
- Nicola Abbagnano, 1901 - 1990
Both men and women are fallible. The difference is, women know it.
- Eleanor Bron
Wisdom is keeping a sense of fallibility of all our views and opinions.
- Edward Fitzgerald Brenan, 1894 - 1987
Pleasure is by no means an infallible guide, but it is the least fallible.
- Wystan Hugh Auden, 1907 - 1973
I am absolutely confident that the mechanisms for judging my fallibility are infallible.
- Tony Blair
We like security: We like the pope to be infallible in matters of faith, and grave doctors to be so in moral questions so that we can feel reassured.
- Blaise Pascal, 1623 - 1662
