Quotes of the Day for 5 March 2009 – Congress
After reading so much of the tumult and rancor in Congress these days, I was amused to note that it was on this day in 1845 that Congress appropriated $30,000 to ship camels to the western US. I don't know if that was intended as some kind of stimulus, but it sounds as if some things never change. Should you think that these quotes are unnecessarily critical of our elected representatives, note that one of them was the son of a noted representative, the others all were elected to Congress themselves.
I don't think it's the function of Congress to function well. It should drag its heels on the way to decision.
- Barber B. Conable, Jr, 1922 – 2003
They say that women talk too much. If you have worked in Congress you know that the filibuster was invented by men.
- Clare Boothe Luce, 1902 - 1987
I support efforts to limit the terms of members of Congress, especially members of the House and members of the Senate.
- James Danforth Quayle
If you give Congress a chance to vote on both sides of an issue, it will always do it.
- Les Aspin, 1938 - 1995
Congressmen are like diapers. You need to change them often, and for the same reason.
- Pete McCloskey
You can't use tact with a Congressman! A Congressman is a hog! You must take a stick and hit him on the snout!
- Henry Brooks Adams, 1838 - 1918
