Quotes of the Day for 28 July 2005 – Singing
Hubert Prior Vallee was born at Island Pond, Vermont on this day in 1901. He joined the Navy in 1917 but was promptly discharged as he was underage. He went back to high school and studied saxophone and clarinet, so when the next war came along he enlisted in the Coast Guard and led one of their district bands. When fronting one of his big bands, he sang through a megaphone. On this day in 1933 the very first singing telegram was delivered, to none other than Rudy Vallee. With those two events on the calendar, today's theme was obvious.
