Quotes of the Day for 26 October 2004 – Shoot

It is unclear exactly what went down on this day in 1881 at Tombstone, Arizona, but history calls it the "Shootout at the OK Corral". We do know that Wyatt Earp walked away, and five of the Clanton Gang didn't. There don't seem to be a lot of quotes on shootouts, exactly, but here are several on shooting.

The quotes:

God is not on the side of the big battalions, but on the side of those who shoot best.
     - Voltaire, 1694 - 1778

Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules, and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting.
     - George Orwell, 1903 - 1950

Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors and miss.
     - Robert Anson Heinlein, The Notebooks of Lazarus Long

A critic is someone who never actually goes to the battle, yet who afterwards comes out shooting the wounded.
     - Tyne Daly

To shoot a man because one disagrees with his interpretation of Darwin or Hegel is a sinister tribute to the supremacy of ideas in human affairs - but a tribute nevertheless.
     - George Steiner

There is a new billboard outside Time Square. It keeps an up-to-the-minute count of gun-related crimes in New York. Some goofball is going to shoot someone just to see the numbers move.
     - David Letterman
