Quotes of the Day for 23 October 2004 – Pace
On this day in 1950 the University of Toronto made a dramatic announcement. Dr. John A. Hopps had invented an implantable cardiac pacemaker to control ventricular fibrillation. The first unit was not actually implanted in a human patient until 1958, and as it was based on vacuum tube technology it wasn't anything like the tiny wonders in use today, but the basic process hasn't changed. I remember staring at ECG traces on the monitor as my father's heart finally failed, seeing how often the next beat of his heart was triggered by the pacemaker that gave him two years he would have missed. My heart keeps a pretty steady pace on its own, it's the rest of my life that could sometimes use a little nudge.
Time neither subtracts nor divides, but adds at such a pace it seems like multiplication.
- Bob Talbert

- Henry David Thoreau, 1817 - 1862
Justice, though moving with tardy pace, has seldom failed to overtake the wicked in their flight.
- Horace, 65 - 8 BC
As I watched the seagulls, I thought, That's the road to take; find the absolute rhythm and follow it with absolute trust.
- Nikos Kazantzakis, 1883 - 1957
Adopt the pace of nature, her secret is patience.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1803 - 1882

- Theodore Roosevelt, 1858 - 1919
