Quotes of the Day for 19 September 2004 – Fire

I spent about twenty hours on Friday evening and Saturday supervising the exothermic oxidation of a significant volume of cellulose with high water content. For those who didn't have a chemistry jones in high school, that means I burned up a lot of wet lumber. It was left over from some construction project several years ago and had been exposed to the elements the whole time. I picked up the end of a 2x6 and it broke off in my hands. If I squeezed it with my fingers, water welled up from the surface. So it was a smoky time, and I probably need to wash my clothes twice. But it put me in mind to choose quotes on Fire.
