Quotes of the Day for 10 August 2004 – Invention

August is National Inventors' Month, set aside to celebrate those whose work has made our work and life better by coming up with new stuff. Being something of a gadget junkie, I sometimes wish those inventors hadn't been quite so effective at coming up with things for me to spend money on, but that's a theme for another day.

The quotes:

An inventor fails 999 times, and if he succeeds once, he's in. He treats his failures simply as practice shots.
     - Charles F. Kettering, 1876 - 1958

Everything that can be invented has been invented.
     - Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. Office of Patents, 1899

Young people are fitter to invent than to judge; fitter for execution than for counsel; and more fit for new projects than for settled business.
     - Francis Bacon, 1561 - 1626

Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society. The optimist invents the airplane and the pessimist the parachute.
     - Gil Stern

I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success.... Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything.
     - Nikola Tesla, 1856 - 1943

To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.
     - Thomas Alva Edison, 1847 - 1931
