Quotes of the Day for 7 August 2004 – Revenge
In 1878, Randalph McCoy accused Floyd Hatfield of stealing a hog, and suspicions between the Hatfields and McCoys began to grow. On this day in 1882, three McCoys (Bud, Tolbert, and Pharmer) stabbed Ellison Hatfield 26 times and shot him in the back, and from there a circle of revenge accelerated into legend. At least thirteen were murdered, over a hundred wounded in some way. Here, then, are some quotes on revenge.
Something of vengeance I had tasted for the first time; as aromatic wine it seemed, on swallowing warm and racy; its afterflavor, metallic and corroding, gave me a sensation as it I had been poisoned.
- Charlotte Brontë, 1816 - 1855
Before seeking revenge, first dig two graves.
- Chinese proverb
Certainly, in taking revenge, a man is but even with his enemy; but in passing it over, he is superior; for it is a prince's part to pardon.
- Francis Bacon, Of Revenge
Living well is the best revenge.
- George Herbert, 1593 - 1633
Life being what it is, one dreams of revenge.
- Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1864 - 1901
Revenge leads to an empty fullness, like eating dirt.
- Mignon McLaughlin
