Quotes of the Day for 30 May 2004 – Innocence
Jehanne Darc was burned at the stake at Rouen, France on this day in 1431. Although she had been charged with heresy, the only charge the inquisitorial court convened by the English occupying much of France at the time could actually show evidence for was wearing men's clothing. She called herself La Pucelle (the Virgin), many called her the Maid of Orleans, and more recently and incorrectly she is referred to as Joan of Arc. She is, quite rightly, held as an exemplar of innocence.
We have no choice but to be guilty. God is unthinkable if we are innocent.
- Archibald MacLeish, 1892 - 1982
Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly; and if you speak, speak accordingly.
- Benjamin Franklin, 1706 - 1790
It is better to risk saving a guilty man than to condemn an innocent one.
- François Marie Arouet (Voltaire), 1694 - 1778
Experience, which destroys innocence, also leads one back to it.
- James Arthur Baldwin, 1924 - 1987
Power is something of which I am convinced there is no innocence this side of the womb.
- Nadine Gordimer
Guilt is ever at a loss, and confusion waits upon it; while innocence and bold truth are always ready for expression.
- William Congreve, 1670 - 1729
