Quotes of the Day for 2 May 2004 – Crying
Lesley Goldstein was born at New York City on this day in 1946, although her family was then in the process of changing back to their ancestral name of Gore. She grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey and started voice lessons at an early age. A cousin had a band, and when their lead singer was sick Leslie stood in at a gig attended by the president of Mercury Records. He put her in touch with Quincy Jones, and at age 17 she recorded "It's My Party" which was rushed out and was on the charts in a couple of weeks. She hit the top five in the charts four more times in the next two years, then fizzled, never again having the level of success of her very first recording. Lesley Gore still sings her oldest hits and writes a lot of music, so she doesn't really have much cause to cry, but Crying is what I'm going with for today's theme.
A good cigar is as great a comfort to a man as a good cry is to a woman.
- Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, 1803 - 1873
Life is an onion and one peels it crying.
- French proverb
It doesn't hurt to be optimistic. You can always cry later.
- Lucimar Santos de Lima
Crying is the refuge of plain women, but the ruin of pretty ones.
- Oscar Wilde, 1854 - 1900
I used to always think that I'd look back on us crying and laugh, but, I never thought I'd look back on us laughing and cry.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1803 - 1882
Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry with your girlfriends.
- Laurie Kuslansky
