Quotes of the Day for 8 March 2004 – Women
Today is International Women's Day, celebrated in many countries since the end of the first world war. It was scheduled for the last Sunday in February in Russia, but Russia was still on the Julian calendar. In 1917 when other countries started to join in, the date was 8 March in most of the world, and that's the day that has been observed ever since. It became a UN observation when the UN was chartered in 1945. I'd been putting off answering a request for quotes about women, knowing how many I would have to sort through, but I guess I'll have to do that now.

- Charlotte Whitton

The especial genius of women I believe to be electrical in movement, intuitive in function, spiritual in tendency.
- Margaret Fuller, 1810 - 1850
The individual woman is required ... a thousand times a day to choose either to accept her appointed role and thereby rescue her good disposition out of the wreckage of her self- respect, or else follow an independent line of behavior and rescue her self-respect out of the wreckage of her good disposition.
- Jeannette Rankin, 1880 - 1973
Both men and women are fallible. The difference is, women know it.
- Eleanor Bron
Well behaved women seldom make history.
- Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
