Quotes of the Day for 23 August 2003 – Dance

Eugene Curran Kelly was born at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on this day in 1912. He wanted to play baseball, but his athletic strengths were diverted to more artistic pursuits. When I think of Kelly, I think of "Singing in the Rain," an amazing demonstration of talent. Today's theme is in honor of this joyful, talented dancer.

The quotes:

Dance is a little insanity that does us all a lot of good.
     - Edward Demby

While I dance I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole. That is why I dance.
     - Hans Bos

Not to go back is somewhat to advance,
And men must walk, at least, before they dance.
     - Alexander Pope, 1688 - 1744

When we teach a child to draw, we teach him how to see. When we teach a child to play a musical instrument, we teach her how to listen. When we teach a child to dance, we teach him how to move through life with grace. When we tach a child to read and write, we teach her how to think. When we nurture imaginatioon, we create a better world, one child at a time.
     - Jane Alexander

The truest expression of a people is in its dances and its music. Bodies never lie.
     - Agnes De Mille, 1905 - 1993

I wish life were more like a musical, so when I burst into song at the bus stop, people would stop staring at me. It might also make them more inclined to learn the chorus and the dance numbers.
     - P. B. Hill
