Quotes of the Day for 14 August 2003 – Security

On this day in 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. Perhaps I'm too cynical, but somehow I've never expected this was going to pay off for my generation. I'm not alone. None of the quotes in the database suggest that a government program is likely to be a source of security, either.

The quotes:

The only real security is not insurance or money or a job, not a house and furniture paid for, or a retirement fund, and never is it another person. It is the skill and humor and courage within, the ability to build your own fires and find your own peace.
     - Audrey Sutherland

The more you seek security, the less of it you have. But the more you seek opportunity, the more likely it is that you will achieve the security that you desire.
     - Brian Tracy

In the end more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free.
     - Edward Gibbon

Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity. They seem more afraid of life than death.
     - James F. Byrnes

The only security men can have for their political liberty, consists in keeping their money in their own pockets.
     - Lysander Spooner

No one can build her security on the nobleness of another person.
     - Willa Cather
