Quotes of the Day for 16 July 2003 – Power
At the end of the afternoon on Monday, the normal supply of power here simply stopped. I raced around shutting down computers before their battery power was exhausted, and said some very undignified things about the battery supply that completely failed for one server. Then I shut down everything possible to keep the key servers running as long as possible. And when power was restored, I had to bring all the systems back up, no small task with some fifteen interdependent computers. So there was no QOTD mailing yesterday, and power was on my mind as I prepared for today, even if none of these quotes address the electrical power.
If you tell the truth, you have infinite power supporting you; but if not, you have infinite power against you.
- Charles Gordon
The man who fears nothing is as powerful as he who is feared by everybody.
- Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, 1759 - 1805
Mankind is safer when men seek pleasure than when they seek the power and the glory.
- Geoffrey Gorer
We haven't got the power to destroy the planet - or to save it. But we might have the power to save ourselves.
- Michael Crichton
Of all manifestations of power, restraint impresses men the most.
Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't.
- Margaret Thatcher
