Quotes of the Day for 12 July 2003 – Bill Cosby

William Henry Cosby, Jr was born at Gernmantown, Pennsylvania on this day in 1937. How much introduction does Cos need? Bill dropped out of school in tenth grade to join the Navy, later got his high school diploma by correspondence and received his B.A. from Temple University with plans to teach physical education. He got his Masters (1972) and Ph.D. (1977) in Education at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He and wife Camille had five children, all of their first names started with E for Excellence. I was hooked the first time I heard him say "How long can you tread water?" in the bit with Noah and God before the flood on his first album, Bill Cosby is a Very Funny Fellow, Right! Here are a few lines, some funny, some serious, from Dr Cosby.

The quotes:

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

Fatherhood is pretending that the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.

Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home.

I am not the boss of my house. I don't know how I lost it. I don't know when I lost it. I don't think I ever had it. But I've seen the boss's job and I don't want it.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

There's no labor a man can do that's undignified, if he does it right.

We have many things in common, the greatest of which is that we are both afraid of the children.
