Quotes of the Day for 8 June 2003 – Vacuum

On this day in 1869, Ives W. McGaffey of Chicago was issued US Patent No. 91,145 for an "Improved Sweeping Machine," the first suction vacuum cleaner. Being hand cranked it really wasn't all that effective and it was thirty years later that he came back with a motorized model. It was a start, but it just didn't suck as well as today's machines.
