Quotes of the Day for 22 May 2003 – Robbery

The Great Train Robbery took place near Marshfield, Indiana on this day in 1868. The seven masked members of the Reno gang made off with $96,000 in cash, gold, and bonds. Of course there were several other events claimed to be "The Great Train Robbery," not to mention a novel and at least two movies, but it will do for a theme for today.

The quotes:

Thieves respect property. They merely wish the property to become their property that they may more perfectly respect it.
     - Gilbert Keith Chesterton, 1874 - 1936

The more laws and order are made prominent, the more thieves and robbers there will be.
     - Lao-Tzu

Why grab possessions like thieves, or divide them like socialists, when you can ignore them like wise men?
     - Natalie Clifford Barney, 1876 - 1972

Have no fear of robbers or murderers. Such dangers are without, and are but petty. We should fear ourselves. Prejudices are the real robbers; vices the real murderers. The great dangers are within us. What matters it what threatens our heads or our purses? Let us think only of what threatens our souls.
     - Victor Hugo, 1802 - 1885

Anytime four New Yorkers get into a cab together without arguing, a bank robbery has just taken place.
     - Johnny Carson
