Quotes of the Day for 24 March 2003 – Speed
Terence Steven McQueen was born at Beech Grove, Indiana on this day in 1930. His dad moved out six months later, his mom followed suit a few years later and left the boy with an uncle. At twelve he moved to Los Angeles and lived with his mother, but was soon involved in gangs and ended up at a reform school called Boys Republic (which he remembered generously in his will). He joined the Marines, and worked as a deck hand, oil field roustabout, and lumberjack before an actress girlfriend convinced him to enter New York's Actor's Studio. On camera he was cool, ready for anything, particularly if it was fast. Off camera, he was into fast living and fast driving, and even received a patent for a bucket seat. The cancer he died from, mesothelioma, is generally associated with asbestos inhalation, possibly a result of wearing his racer's fireproof suit. In his honor I've chosen quotes on Speed.
