Quotes of the Day for 21 March 2003 – Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was born at Eisenach, Germany on this day in 1685. He was the youngest of eight children in a musical family, and spent his entire life performing and creating Music in Germany. (Well, not quite entire, he did find time to sire twenty children by two wives, ten of whom lived.) As an enthusiastic, if unskilled, singer, I put Bach right at the top of my list. It almost seems that every note is inevitable, and when you get to that note, you know it's right. Even I sound good if Bach wrote the harmonies.

The quotes:

I play the notes as they are written, but it is God who plays the music.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

My present post amounts to about 700 thaler, and when there are rather more funerals than usual, the fees rise in proportion; but when a healthy wind blows, they fall accordingly.

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

If one were asked to name one musician who came closest to composing without human flaw, I suppose general consensus would choose Johann Sebastian Bach.

If Bach is not in Heaven, I am not going!
