Peter Aurness was born at Minneapolis, Minnesota on this day in 1926. He took to performing early, he joined the musicians union at age 15 so he could play clarinet and saxophone in local dance bands. At 16 he was an announcer at WMIN. After high school he spent two years in the Air Force, then came home to major in drama at the University of Minnesota. After graduation he left for Hollywood, changing his name to Peter Graves. (His older brother Jim dropped only one character, changing his name to Arness and becoming Marshall Dillon on Gunsmoke.) His career has been a great success, with film and television credits running for pages, but he is best known for the role of Jim Phelps on the TV series Mission: Impossible.
