Quotes of the Day for 13 March 2003 – Music

Thoughts of my father will rule my world for a while, and rule my choice of quotes for a few days as well. His vocation was music: symphony conductor, choir director, occasional composer, piano teacher, and concert pianist. I think he would have appreciated these quotes on Music.

The quotes:

Music is the harmonious voice of creation; an echo of the invisible world.
     - Giuseppe Mazzini, 1805 - 1872

Music is a strange thing. I would almost say it is a miracle. For it stands halfway between thought and phenomenon, between spirit and matter.
     - Heinrich Heine, 1797 - 1856

Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable.
     - Leonard Bernstein, 1918 - 1990

Music is well said to be the speech of angels; in fact, nothing among the utterances allowed to man is felt to be so divine. It brings us near to the infinite.
     - Thomas Carlyle, 1795 - 1881

Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossile to be silent.
     - Victor Hugo, 1802 - 1885

Music creates order out of chaos: for rhythm imposes unanimity upon the divergent, melody imposes continuity upon the disjointed, and harmony imposes compatibility upon the incongruous.
     - Yehudi Menuhin
