Quotes of the Day for 2 February 2003 – Shadow

Today is Candlemas on the Christian calendar, 40 days after Christmas, a day of purification when the candles to be used in church for the coming year were blessed. Last night, thousands around the world were lighting candles to dispel a little of the shadow of the morning's disaster. It's hard to take the levity of groundhogs and silly weather forecasts after that. Better to acknowledge our responsibility to light a candle and disperse the darkness, to push back the shadows.
Not armies, not nations, have advanced the race; but here and there, in the course of ages, an individual has stood up and cast his shadow over the world.
- Edwin Hubbel Chapin

- Frank Moore Colby, 1865 - 1925
To rid ourselves of shadows - who we are - we must step into either total light or total darkness.
- Jeremy Preston Johnson
As long as rivers shall run down to the sea, or shadows touch the mountain slopes, or stars graze in the vault of heaven, so long shall your honor, your name, your praises endure.
The shadow of your sorrow hath destroyed
The shadow of your face.
- William Shakespeare, King Richard II
We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand.
- Edward Morgan Forster, A Room with a View, 1908
