Quotes of the Day for 31 December 2002 – Resolve
When I hear the word "resolve" my first thoughts are of the optical use; higher resolution in your scanner lets you pick out the finest details in the image, the best telescopes let you see separately stars that appear as a single point of light in lesser instruments. But this being the last day of the passing year, tonight many of you will raise a glass and resolve to change direction in the new year. I gave that up, my resolutions to quit smoking with the change of the calendar never lasted a week. (I did quit smoking, but it was in the autumn.) For those who find it useful, here are some encouraging words.
Resolve to perform what you ought. Perform without fail what you resolve.
- Benjamin Franklin, 1706 - 1790
We keep going back, stronger, not weaker, because we will not allow rejection to beat us down. It will only strengthen our resolve. To be successful there is no other way.
- Earl G. Graves
There is no chance, no destiny, no fate, that can circumvent or hinder or control the firm resolve of a determined soul.
- Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Resolve to live as with all your might while you do live, and as you shall wish you had done ten thousand years hence.
- Johathan Edwards, 1703 - 1758
Obstacles cannot crush me. Every obstacle yields to stern resolve. He who is fixed to a star does not change his mind.
- Leonardo da Vinci, 1452 - 1519
Let us contemplate our forefathers, and posterity, and resolve to maintain the rights bequeathed to us from the former, for the sake of the latter.
- Samuel Adams, 1722 - 1803
