Quotes of the Day for 25 October 2002 – Sacrifice
"Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred."
It was all an error on the part of a messenger. Lord Raglan sent word to Lord Cardigan to advance, the message was short of details and misunderstood. Instead of riding past the artillery to take an undefended hill, the Light Brigade charged the guns. Of the 637 in that charge, fewer than 200 returned, 500 horses were lost, and the battle was a strategic setback for the British. But we all know the words of Tennyson's poem, and that battle, fought at Balaklava on this day in 1854, has come to symbolize courage and Sacrifice.
What a curious phenomenon it is that you can get men to die for the liberty of the world who will not make the little sacrifice that is needed to free themselves from their own individual bondage.
- Bruce Barton, 1886 - 1967
The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become.
- Charles du Bois
Humility must always be the portion of any man who receives acclaim earned in the blood of his followers and the sacrifices of his friends.
- Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1890 - 1969
One has to be a lowbrow, a bit of a murderer, to be a politician, ready and willing to see people sacrificed, slaughtered, for the sake of an idea, whether a good one or a bad one.
- Henry Miller
Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom.
- John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1917 - 1963
