Quotes of the Day for 5 October 2002 – Birth

Chester Alan Arthur, the 21st president of the US, may have been born at Fairfield, Vermont on this day in 1830. During the 1880 presidential campaign, with his parents both dead and no official written records surviving, opponents claimed that he had actually been born later in Canada. That would have made him ineligible to become Vice President, but it was unproven and he was VP under James Garfield until Garfield's death in 1881. The exact details of birth are important - at least if you want to grow up to be president. Here, then, are some quotes on birth.

The quotes:

We cannot think first and act afterward. From the moment of birth we are immersed in action, and can only fitfully guide it by taking thought.
     - Alfred North Whitehead, 1861 - 1947

Birth and death are the front and back covers of the book of life. The story lies in the pages in-between.
     - Edward Lewis

Giving birth is little more than a set of muscular contractions granting passage of a child. Then the mother is born.
     - Erma Louise Bombeck, 1927 - 1996

Even at our birth, death does but stand aside a little. And every day he looks towards us and muses somewhat to himself whether that day or the next he will draw nigh.
     - Francis Bacon, 1561 - 1626

There is no cure for birth and death save to enjoy the interval. The dark background which death supplies brings out the tender colors of life in all their purity.
     - George Santayana, 1863 - 1921

Conflict begins at the moment of birth.
     - Jean Baker Miller
