William Hesketh Lever was born at Bolton, England on this day in 1851. With a local chemist he developed the first soap to be made from vegetable oils, with his younger brother he built a soap-making empire. As he grew wealthy he became a notable philanthropist, and ended up with the grandiose title First Viscount Leverhulme of the Western Isles.
