Quotes of the Day for 29 August 2002 – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr

Oliver Wendell Holmes was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts on this day in 1809. As an author, poet, physician, Harvard professor, and humorist he left a great body of quotable things behind, to the delight of quotation collectors. Alas, he also left a learned and quotable son with the same name who became a justice of the US Supreme Court. To the best of my knowledge, these quotes are all from the elder Mr Holmes.

The quotes:

A mind once stretched by a new idea never regains it original dimension.

It is the province of knowledge to speak, and it is the privilege of wisdom to listen.

Laughter and tears are meant to turn the wheels of the same machinery of sensibility; one is wind-power, and the other water-power; that is all.

Old age is fifteen years older than I am.

      [Oops! Actually Bernard Baruch]

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
      [Oops! Actually Ralph Waldo Emerson]

The young man knows the rules, but the old man knows the exceptions.
