Quotes of the Day for 14 August 2002 – Cathedral

I haven't been in a lot of cathedrals, but of those I've seen the most impressive is the Kölner Dom, or Cologne Cathedral in English. The amazing stone structure appears in today's history not once, but twice. Construction started on the building on this day in 1248. The building was complete on this day in 1880. (Remember that the next time you get a schedule estimate from a contractor!) These quotes seemed suitable while remembering the structure.

The quotes:

Noble life demands a noble architecture for noble uses of noble men. Lack of culture means what it has always meant: ignoble civilization and therefore imminent downfall.
     - Frank Lloyd Wright, 1867 - 1959

Architecture is the alphabet of giants; it is the largest set of symbols ever made to meet the eyes of men. A tower stands up like a sort of simplified statue, of much more than heroic size.
     - Gilbert Keith Chesterton, 1874 - 1936

I call architecture "petrified music." Really there is something in this: The tone of mind produced by architecture approaches the effect of music.
     - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1749 - 1832

A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.
     - Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Flight to Arras

We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.
     - Winston Churchill, 1874 - 1965
